ITD senior leadership embraces new approach to communication

The Idaho Transportation Department is a place for innovation - the department takes a great deal of pride in embracing new efficiencies and innovations in an effort to provide Idahoans with the country’s best transportation department.  Sometimes communicating those innovations and initiatives to more than 1,600 employees across the state can be a daunting task.

In an effort to provide a clear and consistent message to ITD employees, stakeholders, and the public, members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) are taking a new approach to communication. In this new approach, SLT members are asked to create a communication plan and develop key messages early when they begin planning new initiatives.
“Managers are using tools and thinking more about communication to reduce surprises,” said Chief Administrative Officer Charlene McArthur.

Staff from the Office of Communication took part in a training exercise with senior leaders to help develop communication plans that focus specifically on identifying key audiences and messages. The hope is this approach to communication will help all divisions of ITD effectively communicate internally and externally.

“The goal is to have effective communications,” McArthur said. “We want consistent messaging, we don’t want anyone to be surprised or confused.”
