Idaho high school filmmakers participate in "Just Drive" challenge

Distractions are everywhere when you get behind the wheel of your car. From the radio, to your phone, and even your morning coffee – there is no shortage of distractions competing for your attention.  Now high school students across the state are adding their voices to many others in urging drivers to “Just Drive.”

Young filmmakers from 22 Idaho high schools took part in this year’s Just Drive Video Contest. The contest sponsored by the Office of Highway Safety, KTVB Channel 7, and the Idaho State Police asks high school students to create a 15-second public service announcement to help prevent distracted driving.

"Millennial are very hard to reach and they are much more likely to be influenced by their peers, so we partnered with KTVB to engage young people to help create messages that resonate with young drivers," explained Josephine Middleton with ITD's Office of Highway Safety.

The 43 submissions ranged from serious and dramatic to light-hearted and humorous. Judges say the creativity displayed by the participants made it hard to narrow down the field and eventually select a winner.

"There were some very creative entries that showed how talented our students are at film making," Middleton said. " A team of ITD judges whittled 46 entries down to 10, and then a panel of teen drivers chose the winning entry. We are very pleased with the winning PSA because we think it will resonate with drivers of all ages."

The winning video will be announced on KTVB’s four o’clock newscast on Friday, March 31. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize and the video will air during Distracted Driving Month in April.

The winning video will be linked in this spot Monday morning.
