Employee leaders give six-month update on
2016 Leadership Summit initiatives

Up-and-coming leaders throughout ITD are showing the results of their effort to improve ITD processes and culture.

In 2016, 150 ITD employees from across the state and up and down the org chart came together to tackle specific issues facing the department and develop leadership skills during the Rapid Innovation Event. The proposed solutions were unveiled during the Leadership Summit in October.

Now, six months later, those teams are reporting on measurable results those initiatives have produced.

One of the improved customer-focused products is the ITD website. With fewer pages and a cleaner look, members of the public are able to get in, get the information they need, and move on to other business. The web team has reported the average time spent on the website went from three minutes to one minute and there is a marked increase in visits, particularly to the DMV pages.

Another team developed a new way to order parts in maintenance sheds. This new, streamlined order process has been put in place and will save an estimated 4,000-8,000 hours each year.

These are just two of the success stories that came out of last year’s innovation event. Many groups continue to develop work groups and efficiencies for the department.

Beyond the measurable outcomes of the event, those who participated found the experience personally and professionally rewarding.

“The Summit had the added benefit of allowing people from across ITD to meet and interact,” said 2016 participant Brian Goeke, a dealer operations manager in DMV. “It gave participants the chance to understand the wide range of people ITD employs who all have different perspective, strengths, and knowledge bases. The Summit allowed employees to become people to each other and not just a list of names in an email.”

The event was so successful, ITD is planning another Rapid Innovation Event this year. Every employee will be able to apply to participate in the 2017 event. This year, teams will be given new problems to solve and collaborate with co-workers throughout the department.

More information of the event will be shared in May. Keep an eye out on your email inbox and future articles on The Transporter.
