Longtime DMV Administrator Alan Frew will hang 'em up at end of month

Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Administrator and longtime Idaho Transportation Department employee Alan Frew will retire at the end of June, 32 years after he started in June 1985 as a Port of Entry Inspector in District 6.

Last fall, Frew, DMV Administrator since 2006, earned a national AASHTO meritorious service award for a lifetime of work at the highest levels within a department of transportation. He also was named the Man of the Year by local transportation group Women Transportation Seminars (WTS) Jan. 25 in Boise.

"Alan's primary contribution to the public is an emphasis on customer service," said ITD Chief Deputy Scott Stokes, whom Frew has reported to for the last decade. "Customer service has been emphasized in every move that he has made in DMV, and it is because of his concern and focus on people and on their welfare."

"If you've ever worked with Alan, you will know how much he cares about people, starting with every DMV employee and including every DMV customer across the state," Stokes added.

Former DMV employee Maggie Ransom, herself a 35-year ITD veteran before coming back part-time in Communication, has often relayed the story about Alan's first days on the job. "One of the first things Alan did when he became a manager years ago was to memorize the names, pictures and job details of every single employee in his work area."
He genuinely cares, and it has shown.

"Alan has piloted DMV through some very challenging change over the past 10 years, and he has done that by developing a very loyal and talented team," said Stokes.

"I have worked with Alan for over 30 years, and he has been instrumental in many changes to our Division of Motor Vehicles," said Reymundo Rodriguez, DMV Compliance Program Manager. "Those changes were positive and he continually demonstrated that the utmost priority is customer service for all.

"Alan not only talked the talk, but also walked the walk, in that his goal each day was to ensure that customers were taken care of and satisfied with their service. His ability to make people laugh and enjoy being in the moment also was a great asset and I will miss that," he added.

"Congratulations, Alan — and enjoy this new adventure!"
