Freeman regains state Roadeo crown, returns to winner's circle
10 years after last triumph

After a decade away from the top spot, Robin Freeman is again the top equipment operator in Idaho with his fourth title at the 2017 ITD Equipment Roadeo held Tuesday (June 13) at the Athol maintenance shed in District 1. Freeman, the Council Maintenance Foreman out of D3, held off two-time defending champion Trent Maupin of D6 to regain the title. Arco Maintenance's Stacy McCurdy took 3rd place.

Freeman and Maupin were nearly untouchable after the first run through the snow plow and loader events, with Maupin holding a 45 point lead. While Freeman didn't score the highest mark in either round, he maintained consistently high scores throughout and secured a 110-point lead at the end.

Freeman last won the state title in 2007 following previous wins in 2003 and 2006. His four state titles is second only to the five won by D4's Jarrett Porter ('94, '96-'98, '01). Freeman is also among the most consistent winners in the state, winning the District 3 title 11 times.

Maupin, a Sugar City/Driggs area TTO, had won the state title in both 2015 and 2016. Freeman and Maupin are set to represent Idaho at the Western Snow & Ice Conference & Roadeo on Sept 27-29 in Loveland, Colo.

McCurdy will be the backup to go to the regional conference if either Freeman or Maupin is unable. Maupin and McCurdy locked up a second straight team win for District 6, along with team members Camilo Serrano (sixth place) and Mike VanWagner (14th place).

The annual equipment roadeo tests drivers’ skills as they maneuver snowplows and heavy loaders through obstacle courses. In addition, contestants are also scored on a written exam of equipment procedures and complete a truck-inspection to detect five "planted" mechanical or electrical problems.
