Drilling shows consistent pavement thickness
on eastern Idaho highways

Drilling last week on several eastern Idaho state highways showed consistent pavement thickness on individual highways, and that the type of pavement along each of the highways in District 6 matched ITD mapping. The drilling is done every few years, as needed.

The American Geotechnics crew of Travis Thomsen and Justin Miller (pictured at right on US-26) drilled core samples Aug. 7-11, then returned to their laboratory in Boise to photograph samples to document thicknesses.

During routine roadbed sampling, the contractor bores holes in the roadway as close as every mile apart to determine depth and quality of asphalt. Technicians take samples of the pavement and patch the holes left behind.

Each stop takes approximately 10 minutes.
