ITD rolls out another Horizontal Career Path: TESL

A new Horizontal Career Path (HCP) has been added at ITD – the Transportation Engineering Services Leader, or TESL. This is a career path for professional engineers. It will begin with engineers in training, and ends with Technical Engineer 1 (TE1), which will now be called TESL. The path formalizes the trajectory professional engineers can expect to have while working at ITD.

“This new HCP will reinstate an Engineer-in-Training program and create a career roadmap, complete with pay steps for performance, so engineers here at ITD can plan their careers,” said D1 District Engineer Damon Allen. HCPs are intended to not only improve the product of ITD, but develop individuals and their career goals.

The aim of the TESL Horizontal Career Path is to improve delivery of the ITD program – the projects selected for design work and construction. One of the department’s goals is to have the design of all projects completed on time or ahead of the deadline.

“The emphasis in all Horizontal Career Paths is the development of competency, not just the completion of training,” said Chief Operating Officer Travis McGrath. “Training serves the purpose of developing competency and should be used as a tool to develop in needed areas.”

TESL joins the HCP ranks alongside TTO (Transportation Technician Operations), TOTL (Transportation Operations Team Leader) and TTE (Transportation Technician Engineering). For more information about TESL or other HCPs, visit the Human Resources Portal page.
