Star Card - Idaho's REAL ID set to launch

The folks at the Division of Motor Vehicles have been busy preparing for a number of big initiatives that will go live in 2018. One of those is the launch of Idaho’s REAL ID – the Star Card.

The Star Card will be an option for Idaho driver’s licenses or identifications cards. It will meet (and exceed) the minimum security standards Congress created with the REAL ID Act.

Here’s why you should care: Starting Oct. 1, 2020 all federal security checks will require REAL ID-compliant IDs. Those security checks include federal courthouses, military bases, or TSA at the airport. That means if you currently use your Idaho driver’s license to board a plane, you won’t be able to in a couple years!

Now, there’s no need to freak out. County DMVs will begin issuing Star Cards in January. Your current ID will be accepted at security checks until Oct. 1, 2020. So you have a 2+ year window to get a Star Card, if you want.

You will need to bring additional documentation with you if you do choose to get a Star Card. To help you out, we made a fancy tool that will help you figure out what to bring before you leave the house. You can check out our “Add the Star” tool on the Star Card website at itd.idaho.gov/starcard.

Starting next week, we will be informing the public about the upcoming launch of the Star Card and we’re thinking people may have some questions. You can help us get good info out.

Check out the aforementioned Star Card website and get to know what’s going on. The questions you have are likely questions you may get from your neighbors and friends. Also, follow us on Facebook and share the ad with your social circle.
There are more than a million Idahoans with a driver’s license. Our goal is to have as many of them know about Star Card as possible. Your participation will be a huge help!
