D2 offering CDL training for incoming maintenance workers
as snowplow season approaches

Consistent with other districts, D2 has been filling many vacant positions in the last month. In an effort to expand the pool of available labor, D2 is opening maintenance positions to those who do not yet hold a CDL, then providing training to enable them to get their certification before winter so they can operate snowplows on our highway system.

D2’s Shop recently converted a 10-wheeler handed down from D4 into a CDL trainer truck (pictured above) to accomplish this. Next spring, the trainer truck will become an attenuator truck, but it is being used for training and testing of newly hired TTA's.

“Our District has been very impressed with the speed in which our new hires have attained their CDL's. Thus far, they have completed their training and testing within three weeks or less,” said Roy Hill, TSEA in D2 Operations. D2 is pairing the new hires with mentors — established ITD maintenance veterans.

D2 has so far completed the CDL training for about 10 new hires in maintenance. Pictured left to right: A trio of new hires- Kyle Morgan, Casey Zeimantz, and Chris Picard - show their CDL licenses.

“This truly has been a team effort at each Foreman area, and has even led to friendly competition between the sheds to beat the records of the quickest turn-around from no CDL to fully licensed CDL holders,” Hill added.
