I-84 weekend crossover work in Canyon County
awarded national paving honor

Asphalt paving work on a busy stretch of Interstate 84 between Franklin Boulevard in Nampa and Franklin Road in Caldwell won a Quality in Construction Award from NAPA (National Asphalt Pavement Association) for the Idaho Transportation Department and the project contractor, Idaho Materials and Construction. That section of I-84 carries 70,000 vehicles per day.

The project was fast-tracked due to accelerated deterioration caused by a historically brutal winter in 2016/17. The contractor worked with ITD to minimize the effect on commuters while completing an eight-mile mill and overlay project to repair the damaged roads. As many as 60 trucks, two hot plants, three paving crews and multiple pavement mills were in operation to repair the pavement and place nearly 65,000 tons of pavement over four short weekends.
.
All of the work was performed with zero safety incidents, even with a compressed schedule. That is something ITD Project Manager Shawna King is very proud of.

“The project maximized safety by separating the traveling public from the construction work zone while at the same time eliminated, almost entirely, impacts (delays) to weekday commuters," King said. "ITD is proud of this highly successful project and the partnership between the department and Idaho Materials and Construction that made it possible."
