ID cards for released inmates

Identification cards, a needed credential for prison inmates being released into society, will soon be issued by the Idaho Department of Correction.

Currently, an inmate has to be transported to a local county sheriff's office. This is labor-intensive for the prison, and disruptive to the county office.

"Identification cards are needed to transition the inmates into society," DMV Operations Manager Bonnie Fogdall said. "Without proper identification, they cannot open bank accounts, cash a check, or fly commercially."

Initially, four issuing stations will be deployed to correctional facilities as a pilot project. The long-term goal is to set up nine stations across the state. Identification cards will be issued by DOC personnel.

"This cooperative program between the DMV and the Department of Correction is an example of how state agencies can meet Governor Otter's priority to create conditions in which all Idahoans can thrive and be architects of their own destiny," Fogdall said.
