FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Orchard Traffic Alert: First part of new bridge will open Saturday (Oct. 17)

BOISE - Motorists will use the first part of the new Orchard Street bridge starting Saturday (Oct. 17) morning.  The Idaho Transportation Department asks motorists to drive with caution and expect delays as traffic is transitioned from the old bridge to the new bridge.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, traffic will begin the transition to the new bridge. Flaggers will direct all intersections on Orchard Street. The new bridge will be open by early afternoon on Saturday.

Once traffic is switched to the new bridge, crews will prepare to demolish the old bridge next week. Once the bridge is demolished, crews will build the remaining three lanes of the bridge.

The project is expected to be complete in spring 2010.

The Orchard Interchange is funded through the GARVEE Transportation Program, which uses Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle (GARVEE) bonds to expedite interstate improvements.

ITD and the Idaho State Police caution motorists to slow down and pay attention when driving in work zones, where increased speeding fines and other penalties apply. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and dial 5-1-1 or visit 511.idaho.gov for information on the state highway or interstate system.
