Nine riders brave elements to reach Bogus Basin Ski Resort

Nine peddlers survived a challenging vertical climb Saturday (July), traveling from north Boise to Bogus Basin Ski Resort. Absent from the annual bicycle ride this year – and not missed much – were the near 100-degree temperatures that sapped riders the previous year. Instead of the 98-degrees of 2010, the weather was nearly perfect for the riders from ITD, the Idaho office of the Federal Highway Administration and the Ada County Highway District.

“After last year’s 98° suffer-fest, everyone agreed that the weather for this year’s ride was almost ideal: not too hot at the bottom and not too cold at the top,” according to a report from Greg Laragan and Barry Takeuchi.

Special commendations went to Takeuchi who made it to the top for the second year in a row on a bike that must weigh at least 30 pounds “with all the bells and whistles (literally) it has.”

“If Barry ever gets a real road bike, we’ll have to make him start a half-hour after the rest of us.”
