ITD chosen 2011 Goodwill Staffing Services employer of year
in recognition of successful temporary placements

When ITD needed temporary workers to cover for employees who were shifted to the Division of Motor Vehicles modernization project and installation of new telephones, it turned to Goodwill Staffing Services.

The short-term need was satisfied by the employment of 31 temporary employees, including 11 individuals in DMV, 11 for the telephone installation project and two employees at District 4 in Shoshone. DMV now has 7.5 Goodwill Staffing Services employees.

As a result of the successful venture and ITD’s commitment to use the temporary staffing services, the department received the 2011 Goodwill Staffing Services Employer of the Year award. Michelle Belknap, CEO of the organization, recently presented the award to ITD’s Cathy Spencer who coordinated DMV’s use of the employees with Human Resource Services and Purchasing.

The staffing process began in July 2010, and the first employees were hired two months later.

ITD also used temporary staff during the President’s Day weekend to remove most of the existing telephones at Headquarters and replace them with network-enabled Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephones. The conversion was completed in about two days and went very smoothly.

“The award would not be possible without the hard work of the Boise Goodwill Services team, Marci Bailie, director, and Susie Totman, sales manager,” Spencer said.

Five of the individuals who worked under the staffing contract with DMV applied for permanent positions within DMV. They went through the mandatory state hiring process, had their applications and experience rated and interviewed for Technical Records Specialist I positions. Today all five are regular, full-time ITD employees, Spencer explains.

Those who were hired competed for the position with a strong understanding of ITD and the specific DMV needs. All five were well prepared for the full-time positions and have settled into their new positions with relative ease.

“I would hope we can continue to work with them (Easter Seals-Goodwill staffing) in the future. It’s been remarkable. We have no complaints from our supervisors or staff,” she reported about the new hires. “I couldn’t ask for it to be any easier. “

Spencer informed the Idaho Transportation Board of the regional award, which covers employers in the Northern Rocky Mountain region (Idaho and Montana) when the board met in Boise last week.

The award will be hung on the DMV conference wall.
