'Warm-mix' asphalt project garners Build America Award

A "warm-mix" asphalt overlay project last summer on Idaho 78 near Givens Hot Springs in rural Owyhee County was chosen recently for a 2011 Build America award from the Association of General Contractors of America and Aon Construction Services Group.

Idaho Sand & Gravel of Nampa, the prime contractor on the project, received the I-beam-shaped award at the AGC’s annual convention in Las Vegas.

In the category of Highway & Transportation, Under $10M Renovation, the Idaho 78 project was honored for using warm-mix technology instead of a traditional hot-mix pavement, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and exemplifying the Federal Highway Administration’s “Every Day Counts” initiative.

Before construction of the $2.6million, 40-lane-mile overlay, IS&G worked closely with ITD Resident Engineer Shawna King and project coordinator Jim Darling to implement a contract change order for using warm-mix asphalt pavement technology.

In addition to IDS&G and ITD construction staff, credit also goes to ITD Southwest Idaho project designer Cary McAlister and ITD Southwest Idaho regional materials engineer John Arambarri.
