D-4 installs signs at Perrine Bridge to deter suicides

Individuals looking for hope before making an ominous choice have a place to turn with the addition of suicide hotline signs posted at the Perrine Bridge. In a partnership involving the Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho (SPAN) and ITD, the signs have been posted near each pedestrian entrance to the Perrine Bridge.

The 18-inch signs, stating “Need hope? Call 1-800-273-8255,” were installed by ITD crew members on Wednesday (Sept. 14).

The telephone number connects to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a 24-hour hotline.  Although Idaho is still without its own prevention hotline, SPAN hopes one will be added in the next few years. The South Central Chapter of SPAN Idaho is working with citizens in the community to develop and implement strategies to reduce suicide and suicidal behavior.  Idaho continues to have higher-than-average rates of suicide.

While suicides from jumping off the bridge comprise only a small number of the total suicides in southern Idaho, they tend to be more visible. Members of the local chapter believe the signs will offer hope and a place to turn.

Signs not associated to regular traffic-related issues generally are not permitted along state highways or within state right-of-way, but SPAN provided a unique opportunity and ITD was pleased to partner with the group and provide the signs, said District 4 Engineer Devin Rigby.
