Don’t fumble this Super Bowl Sunday by driving impaired

Whether you celebrate or commiserate this Super Bowl Sunday, ITD and its law enforcement partners remind fans to not drive impaired.

“We know people will be going out to local bars or restaurants, or to a neighbor or friend’s house to watch the game," explained Kevin Bechen with ITD’s Office of Highway Safety. “Make a life-saving choice and designate a sober driver before the party begins and if you plan to drink, leave your keys at home."

“It’s important to have a transportation plan if alcohol is consumed,” Bechen said. “Drivers should be well-rested and prepared to drive the distances required to get their impaired passengers home safely.”

He encouraged partygoers to cover costs and consider buying gas for designated drivers.

“Whatever non-alcoholic beverage they are drinking, make sure their glass is always full,” he said. “Pick up their tab for food and drink.”

Bechen offered additional tips to make game day safer.

  • If you are impaired, call a taxi or sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
  • Promptly report drunk drivers to law enforcement. To contact the Idaho State Police, call *ISP.
  • If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take his or her keys and help make safe travel arrangements.
