D-3 experiments with new pothole solution

Maybe it’s a tale of two potholes.

ITD’s Caldwell maintenance crew launched a road test this month to determine whether a new pothole patching material has adequate staying power in Idaho’s varying climates. One pothole was filled with conventional hotmix asphalt; a Polyurethane patch was used on another nearby hole.

The Polyurethane material is claimed to work better in colder temperatures and is less water sensitive as the material commonly used. The manufacturer claims the new material has a life expectancy of about 10 years.

Use of the new material and application process requires only limited additional training. ITD borrowed equipment to test the new method. American Construction Supply is considering purchasing the equipment and making it available on a rental basis.

The new product has been used in several other western states.
