Design-build pilot project targeted for Idaho 44 project

A new, more efficient project-delivery system called Design-Build will be used by ITD for the first time on an intersection-improvement pilot project at North Linder Road and State Street (Idaho 44) near Eagle High School.

The project is tentatively scheduled to get under way this fall, but throughout the spring field crews will be in the neighborhood collecting data for the ongoing project design.

"Design-Build accelerates project delivery and allows more innovation in construction methods," said Aaron Bauges, ITD project manager.

"ITD typically uses a method of design, bid, then build - often with different entities involved in each step," he said. "However, in Design-Build, these steps are combined under one contractor, which allows for streamlining of effort and coordination."
The project will improve traffic flow and safety by providing additional through- and turning lanes and replacing the existing traffic signal. The project also may include reconstruction of adjoining roads.

Although Design-Build is relatively new to Idaho, it is not new to the contracting community. The process is used extensively in other states to deliver projects to the public quickly, efficiently and effectively.

The project is jointly funded by ITD and the Ada County Highway District.
