Gov. Otter unveils new Gowen Field street sign to honor
Gen. Manning's lifetime of service to Idaho

Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter presided over a surprise renaming of a street and the unveiling of a street sign Tuesday at Gowen Field to honor Gen. Darrell Manning for his lifetime of service to the state.

Gen. Manning retired as chairman of the Idaho Transportation Board in January after five years of guiding the board.

He was the first director of the Idaho Transportation Department, served four terms in the Idaho House and one term in the Senate, was director of the Department of Aeronautics (now the ITD Division of Aeronautics), the State Board of Education, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, the Division of Financial Management, the Idaho Military Division and the Bureau of Disaster Services (now Bureau of Homeland Security.)

An Air Force veteran and retired adjutant general, he logged 5,700 hours of military flying and 8,000 hours as a civilian pilot, flew 65 different aircraft and traveled more than 2 million miles as a pilot.

The street sign unveiling took place at the intersection of Farman and Guard next to the Gowen Field Memorial Park.
