Cubs descend on Johnson Creek strip

Each year, the skies over Johnson Creek airstrip in the Sawtooth Mountains are filled with small private airplanes that descend on the remote backcountry destination. The popular, grass-carpeted airstrip is nestled between the peaks overshadowing Yellow Pine.

It attracted nearly 150 people and 100 aircraft for the Super Cub Fly-in that began today (Friday) and continues through Sunday.

Johnson Creek attracts Super Cub enthusiasts from across the country for a total-immersion experience of mountain-airstrip flying, camping, fishing and airplane admiration.

The airstrip is a favorite base camp for backcountry pilots because of its manicured runway, amenities and proximity to Yellow Pine, Sulfur Creek, Moose Creek, the Salmon River and other remote recreational spots for day trips.
