License, ID renewals now possible 25 months before expiration

Idaho drivers and holders of state-issued identification cards can apply for renewals more than two years before their current licenses and cards expire under provisions of legislation approved this year.

In the past, renewals could be requested up to 12 months before the expiration date. Under HB473, that period is extended to 25 months. Effective Monday (July 2), individuals can renew licenses or cards that have expiration dates through July 2014.

“The change will be especially beneficial for Idahoans who are out of the state for extended periods, such as students, military personnel, travelers, missionaries and those who work out of state,” explains Ed Pemble, driver services manager for ITD.

“If you know that you will be out of state when your license or card expires, you now have more than twice as long to renew it,” Pemble added.

Driver’s licenses and ID cards are available through county sheriff’s offices statewide. For information about the application process, visit the DMV website.
