Boy Scouts earn badges, plow virtual snow during ITD visit

Earning a new traffic safety merit badge was on the minds of a group of nearly 24 Boy Scouts last week, but the opportunity to take a "spin" in the snowplow simulator also caught their interest.

Boise Police officers guided the Boy Scouts through how traffic safety is enforced, offered vehicle safety tips and demonstrated how vehicle-stopping distances are calculated. The group also attended safety-related presentations by ITD's Office of Highway Safety.

The simulator was located at ITD Headquarters for the 2C Summer Camp, occurring that same day, so the Scouts took time out from their work on the merit badge to give it a try.

"The simulator was fun; it was like a big video game," said Michael George, (top photo), from Meridian Troop 62 in Meridian.

She acknowledged the help of Lisa Losness, Ted Mason, Brett J Purvis and Cindy Mendoza for their efforts to make the Boy Scouts' ITD tour complete.

All Boy Scouts who participated earned their traffic safety badge. Troop leaders said the youths enjoyed the activities at ITD so much they have asked to return.
