ITD gains 3,200 productive work days in FY '12

What does 3,200 fewer days lost to injury in one year mean to an organization? Greater productivity, to be sure. A more positive working atmosphere. Better mental well-being for employees. Less malingering and complaining. The list goes on.

In the recently completed Fiscal Year 2012, there were 938 days lost to injury, compared to 4,147 the previous fiscal year. The difference is roughly equivalent to an additional 1 1/2 full-time positions.

“As we pursue our goal of being the best transportation department in the country, one of our areas of focus has been to become a safer place for employees to work,” said ITD Employee Safety and Risk Manager Vic Parrish.

Parrish compiled his statistical analysis at the request of Texas DOT, which asked the question of all state DOTs.

The main factor in the reduction was the lessening of severity overall in injuries, which Parrish attributed to “increased employee awareness and compliance with safety precautions.”

“I would like to thank you all for your hard work and dedication to the safety of yourselves and your co-workers,” he said.

“This success belongs to you, and I want you all to know how deeply appreciative and thankful I am to each and every one of you. I’m proud to be working with such an excellent group of people.“

“Congratulations.”
