Summit to focus on building strong leaders ITD leaders from throughout the state will converge in Boise Tuesday for the department’s first leadership summit. The all-day event at the Boise Centre will include a wide range of learning experiences designed to empower employees to become better leaders, and through their leadership, make ITD an even stronger organization. Director Brian Ness, along with ITD’s Executive Team, provided the vision for creating the summit as a way to recognize employees who demonstrate leadership qualities by how they approach their jobs every day. It also will serve as an opportunity for those who have leadership potential to further develop those skills and abilities. “Leadership in action can be an employee who does his or her work well and inspires others to exhibit that same commitment to excellence,” Director Ness said. “That shared commitment helps us all move toward the same goals.” Leadership can assume a variety of forms and shapes and isn’t limited to top-level managers, he said in a recent Direct from the Director message. “Sometimes you assume a leadership role without knowing it. Leaders are not defined by titles or positions but by how they approach their job and influence the performance of others. That happens at the highest levels of the department and in the trenches on the front line.” Those participating in the summit, approximately 200 employees representing a cross-section of the department, will have the opportunity to learn from proven leaders, both in government and in the private sector. Speakers include Gov. C.L. "Butch” Otter, Dr. Tom DeCoster, Jim Johnson, Transportation Board Chairman Jerry Whitehead, Boise State University adjunct professor Bryan Yager, Brig. Gen. Bill Bankhead and members of ITD’s Executive Team. Otter is scheduled to speak at about 7:50 a.m. Summit schedule
