Called “the best leadership training I have ever had,” by one participant, ITD brought more than 200 department employees and agency partners together for an intense day of learning how to improve customer service by becoming better leaders.

ITD’s Leadership Summit, held last week at Boise Centre, gave participants a wide range of learning experiences and the opportunity to hear from proven leaders, both in government and in the private sector.

Speakers included Transportation Board Chairman Jerry Whitehead, Gov. C.L. "Butch” Otter, ITD Director Brian Ness, Dr. Tom DeCoster, Level Three Performance Solutions Managing Partner Jim Johnson, Brig. Gen. Bill Bankhead, members of the department’s Executive Team, and Boise State University Adjunct Professor Bryan Yager.

“The Leadership Summit was absolutely phenomenal,” noted one participant.

“The speakers were outstanding,” wrote another.

Additional comments offered about the effort included:

“The planning team did a fantastic job;”

“Very well done. Professional and flawless in the execution;”

“Well produced;” and

“Captivated all day.”

Then there were the speakers, beginning with ITD Director Brian Ness.

“Employees have learned, and we can be stubborn about this, that Brian means what he says,” wrote a participant. “He cares, he works hard for us and the State of Idaho, and he has integrity.”

Another wrote that, “Brian brought good energy to the meeting and got it off to a good start. I feel that Brian has the right ideas to get ITD going in a better direction.”

Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter’s appearance scored big with one summit attendee.

“I appreciated Gov. Otter showing up . . . It set the stage for the rest of the day. I felt that if it was important enough for him to show up, then it was important enough for me to participate.

Another found DeCoster to be an intriguing speaker.

“I was impressed with how much common sense logic he used to describe the qualities of a leader in a meaningful way. It was also motivating to hear from the Governor, as well as Brian Ness and the Executive board.”

Many participants wrote that they enjoyed Gen. Bankhead’s remarks:

“The best speaker was Brigadier General Bankhead. His building blocks were applicable to all human beings no matter what organization that we are contributing to as members. He is a well-organized speaker that gets straight to the point;”

“I thought the General gave an excellent presentation and we were fortunate to have him give a talk;” and

“General Bill Bankhead was awesome.”

One attendee seemed to sum up the thoughts of many of the day’s participants.

“I liked everything about the summit. Having multiple speakers with very different backgrounds was very good. They all had about the same message to convey but each one of them said it in a different way. This was excellent. I heard positive feedback from people about seeing Gov. Otter and the ITD staff at the summit. That showed me that everyone cares about what we do and how we do it.”
