Progress report: Extension of Idaho 16

Work began early this summer on the first phase of extending Idaho16 – a project that is expected to be completed in August 2014. The first phase will connect State Street to Chinden Boulevard and construct a new 1,700-foot bridge over the Boise River.

Long-range plans include an extension of the highway that will tie in with Interstate 84 between Meridian and Nampa, although funding has not been secured yet.

The bridge will be an 11-span, 10-pier concrete deck structure and will serve an estimated 22,000 drivers per day when it opens.

In preparation, crews are driving test piles at the north end of the new bridge location, installing irrigation structures and building access roads. Cofferdams also have been created to allow drainage of the area.

The Idaho 16 project supports Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter’s Project 60 initiative to foster economic growth and development. It also complements ITD’s mission to provide highway safety and mobility, and promote economic opportunity.

Concrete Placing Co. Inc., of Boise, is the contractor on this $19.4 million project.

Project snapshot:

Ten bridge piers will require 650 pilings
Bridge will be 11 spans
Eight coffer dams
Work on bridge piers typically is 15-20 feet below ground
Groundwater depth is 3-6 feet
Completion scheduled for 2014
