Brown-bag series to focus on heritage through quilts, cloths

The quilts and cloths people make worldwide often are used to capture memories or tell a story. At the same time, they provide warmth or comfort.

For some refugees, those items may be all that remain from another time and place.

Representatives from Artisans4Hope will share their personal stories through quilts and cloths Thursday (Sept. 27) at noon in Darrel V Manning Boardroom and Auditorium at Headquarters. The program is part of ITD’s brown-bag lunch series.

ITD employees are invited to bring their own quilts or story cloths to the auditorium at 11:45 a.m. to add to this exploration of common themes, experiences and family relationships.

Artisans4Hope is a nonprofit organization that uses needle and thread to help displaced people learn sewing, knitting and English-language skills. The organization was created to “enhance the lives of and empower refugees through training and collaboration.”

All money raised through the sale of items made at the four-year-old organization goes directly to refugees, helping them become self-sufficient income earners.

The program will be broadcast to all ITD districts.
