Tips for saving money on health care

Blue Cross of Idaho
We know health insurance coverage can't really compete when it comes to exciting news. But there are some insurance tips that can help keep you and your family healthy and even save you money—and that's pretty exciting.

Stop in and say hello
Even if you feel great, it's important to see your doctor at least once a year. That way, he or she can get a baseline on your health and keep an eye out for problems before they become serious. Need a new doctor? Search our directory.

Go generic
Many brand-name drugs have generic counterparts, which are equally safe and effective—and usually cheaper. If you're prescribed a medication, check with your doctor about safe, effective, non-brand-name options.

Think twice about the ER
The emergency room sometimes seems like the easiest option, but don't forget that it usually comes with much higher out-of-pocket costs. Unless you have an injury that's likely to cause permanent damage or death, stick with urgent care centers or your regular physician.

Keep track of your claims
When you receive an explanation of benefits (EOB), check it over to make sure you were only charged for services you received. If you do spot a mistake, call customer service to help clear it up. Also, compare the EOB to the bill you received from your provider. If the bill differs from what you see on the EOB, call the provider's office.
