District 3 helps with logistics of school fundraiser

Horseshoe Bend parents jumped into action this fall when athletic and academic programs faced extinction because of a school-funding crisis. Last month, they celebrated a successful fund-raising effort and offered praise for ITD’s help in the process.

Brian Inwards and his Cascade-Banks maintenance staff went the extra mile to help ensure the event was conducted safely and resulted in minimal impact to the traveling public.

District 3 issued the necessary highway permit, provided organizers of the fundraiser with highway signs, orange cones and vests to ensure safety of a community walk/run. ITD also set out portable message signs on both ends of the community to warn drivers of potential traffic impacts of the fundraiser.

Three moms in particular – Malissa Mayer, Melanie Flake and Lillie Crawford – were instrumental in organizing the “Race 2 the Summit,” a late-September event that attracted 330 runners, 125 volunteers and generated more than $13,000 in support for threatened school programs.

The event included a half marathon, 10,000-meter run, a 5,000-meter run and a children’s fun run.

Of the amount generated, $8,340 went to Horseshoe Bend school to acquire new curriculum for the 4th and 5th grades, a new stereo for the music department, hands-on learning kits, classroom supplies, funding for field trips, new accelerated reading books, new calculus calculators, touch stations for iPod, three Shakespeare performances, and more.

In addition, $1,000 went to fund two scholarships for graduating seniors, $875 went to the athletic department, and $300 was donated to the volunteer fire department.
