Lunch program to focus on removing 'dis' from disability

Learn more about how the Idaho Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (IDVR) works within the community to help people succeed at ITD’s next brown-bag lunch program Thursday (Dec. 20).

The program begins at noon and will feature presentations by Virginia C. Howard, director of vocational rehabilitation for the Shoshone Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian Reservation, and Nanna Hanchett, chief of field services for IDVR. ITD Districts in the Pacific Time Zone can watch the program via video conference at 11 a.m.

“The biggest barriers for individuals with disabilities are often not the individual’s physical, mental or cognitive limitations, but rather the attitudes, behaviors and physical barriers found in their environment and society,” Hanchett explained.

“We have made dramatic improvements in these areas over the years but we still have a long way to go,” she said. “Every person, every organization and every employer can work to remove the ‘dis’ in disability.

IDVR assists individuals with disabilities to prepare for, obtain or maintain employment. The agency works with partners and employers such as ITD, St. Lukes, Walmart and many others to assist individuals with recognizing their strengths, gaining skills and obtaining successful employment.
