Work begins on Murphy shed that will improve customer service

A new maintenance facility is rising from flat ground in southwest Idaho.

Construction began last month on a new Murphy maintenance shed that will enable ITD to better serve the needs of motorists on Idaho 78 between Grand View and Marsing.

"Realigning the Mountain Home and Caldwell maintenance boundaries and building this new shed in Murphy will help ITD provide better snowplow coverage and will increase customer service," said District 3 Maintenance Engineer Tom Points when the project was announced.

The new facility represents ITD's commitment to three primary goals: safety, mobility and economic opportunity. Maintenance personnel based at the new facility will be responsible for the area between Mountain Home and Caldwell, including parts of Idaho 78, 45, 167 and 51. David Stephenson was named maintenance foreman for the region last year.

A short groundbreaking ceremony Nov. 21 marked the project’s formal beginning, although earth was turned more than a week earlier.

Gafford Construction of Boise recently poured concrete footings for the building and an above-ground fueling island nearby. Trenching also created a path for power lines to the new facility and a water line that connects to a nearby well.

The new facility is expected to be finished in April.
