Quick license reinstatement preserves school field trip

A commercial vehicle driver without a license is like a cowboy without a horse. Neither will get very far down the road.

ITD can’t provide a horse, but it can provide immediate service to reinstate a driver’s license that had been suspended.

Charles Ridley (name changed to protect identity) was in a state of near panic recently when he called ITD’s Division of Motor Vehicles. He almost could feel the anticipation of grade school students as they awaited a 10 a.m. field trip departure.

The district's practice of verifying driving privileges indicated that his license was not valid. Ridley believed he had already done everything necessary to reinstate driving privileges. Apparently the DMV never received his $85 payment for reinstatement.

And the field trip drew ever closer.

Ridley’s desperate phone call went to the DMV's Susan Boyd who expedited the reinstatement process, reducing what normally is two days to less than an hour. She accepted his credit card payment, updated his driver’s record and faxed verification of the reinstatement to the school office indicating that he was clear to drive the school bus.

Ridley called Boyd back shortly before 10 a.m. to say thanks for the prompt and outstanding service, then headed down the road with a group of energetic students.

Boyd went well beyond normal expectations, not only reinstating driving privileges but also saving a school field trip and giving children a new perspective of education.

Her personal attention is an example of outstanding customer service that is repeated often throughout the day by ITD employees who are committed excellence.
