Scholarships advocating safe driving available to students

Safe driving saves lives, helps keeps families whole and may provide some extra money for college for young people ages 17-25. Buckle Up for Bobby Inc. was established recently to honor the memory of Bobby Rogers and Tiffany Walters by offering college scholarships to encourage safe driving habits among young drivers and passengers.

A fund-raising benefit supporting the Buckle Up for Bobby scholarships and the organization’s public awareness activities are planned for Sunday (April 14) from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Rembrandt’s Coffee House in Eagle.

Young people may apply for one of eight scholarships worth $500 each by visiting www.buckleupforbobby.com and submitting an application.

The scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors or students enrolled in college. Students must have been accepted to attend an accredited higher education institution and submit an essay on safe driving/passenger habits.

Proof of attendance at an “Alive at 25” defensive driving class taught by law enforcement officers across the state also is required.

The Community Scholarship Program selection committee will review all applications and select individuals for the scholarships.

Rogers, 16, and Walters, 17, were killed in a 2012 car crash in which none of the four occupants was a wearing seat belt.
