ITD helps create smooth sailing for holiday traffic

After a weekend of unseasonably cold and wet weather, the last thing campers needed over the extended Memorial Day weekend was to jockey for positions on the speedway, better known as Idaho 55.

To make their return trip to the Treasure Valley less stressful, ITD arranged for flaggers to alternate traffic through the highly congested junction of Idaho 55 and the Banks-to-Lowman Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway. Flaggers took their positions at 10 a.m. and directed traffic through the corridor until 6 p.m.

“Everything went smoothly with no problems,” said Brian Inwards, ITD’s Cascade/Banks foreman. “Traffic seemed fairly light, probably due to bad weather,” he added.

ITD began helping motorists through the corridor in 1995.

The department also suspended most highway construction projects for the weekend to make the first unofficial weekend of the summer run smoothly for motorists.
