Fly-in draws fans of Super Cubs and camping

The skies above Idaho’s premier backcountry airstrip at Johnson Creek will be buzzing June 13-16 when Super Cub enthusiasts from across the country gather for the annual “Fly-in.”

Up to 150 people and 100 aircraft are expected to participate in a total-immersion experience of mountain-airstrip flying opportunities, camping, fishing and airplane admiration.

Johnson Creek airstrip is a favorite base camp for backcountry pilots because of its manicured runway, on-site amenities and proximity to Yellow Pine, Sulfur Creek, Moose Creek, the Salmon River and other remote recreational spots for day trips.

The popular, grass-carpeted airstrip is nestled between the Sawtooth Mountain peaks overshadowing Yellow Pine. The airstrip has a campground for fly-in campers, restrooms, complimentary hot showers and bunkhouses.

ITD’s Division of Aeronautics maintains two courtesy vehicles that can be rented for a small fee and used in the local area.
