ITD responds to Idaho 21 rockslide near Lucky Peak Reservoir

A rockslide Wednesday morning (Nov. 20) caused a brief closure of Idaho 21 near Lucky Peak Dam Road at milepost 11, a few miles north of Boise.

A vehicle hit a rock in the road and blew a tire around 6:40 a.m., and later the front end of a small truck was lifted almost straight up when it struck another boulder that had fallen.

The highway was closed fully for several hours out of safety concerns. When the rain subsided, the road was opened to alternating one-lane traffic in the area, guided by flaggers at each end, with a maintenance worker stationed in the middle of the route to keep an eye on the hillside in case of continued rockfall.

Late in the afternoon and through the night and morning commute Thursday, one lane remained open in both directions until repairs began on the damaged concrete guardrail. The repairs were complete and highway opened (two northbound and one southbound lane) by noon Thursday.

The cost for labor and equipment to respond to the rockslide initially was an estimated $3,850, and another $1,760 to make repairs.
