Training and Development rolls out new course format

Training and Development has restructured many of the computer classes offered to be shorter and focused on more specific subjects. This will allow people to choose class subjects that apply directly to the work they do.

All the classes are now one-half day in length. The Excel, Word and Outlook classes, which had been multi-day classes, are now divided into smaller modules. Other computer classes will not be restructured at this time.

Some of the most basic and common parts of the computer programs are covered in online training modules that are required to be completed before attending class, explained Tony Loomer, training and development manager.

"After completing the online prerequisites you will complete a Core class specific to the program you are learning Excel, Word or Outlook," he said. "After taking the Core Class you may register for other modules of that program."

If employees have taken the former Excel Level 1 class or Word Level 1 class within the last five years they have already met the core requirements for that program and are not required to complete the "Introduction to Microsoft Office 2010" online training or the core class again, he said.

He added that if employees have taken the former Outlook 2010, Level 1 class they have already met the core requirements for that program.

"People are always welcome to attend the core classes as a refresher," he said.

All the new modules and the prerequisite online trainings are available in the Learning Hub. As always, an employee's supervisor must approve all training.

If no sessions are currently scheduled in a home location, Loomer advises people to select the "Notify me when sessions are scheduled" link and "choose your home location."
