GIS completes updating department’s milepoint logs

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) section at ITD has generated new and current milepoint logs, using Network Manager, the linear referencing system for the department.

Milepoint logs contain "events," such as bridges, passing lanes, intersections, historical sites and overhead utility crossings, that occur along state highways and local highways that receive federal aid. All routes are listed in numeric order statewide and within each ITD district. ITD produces two basic types of milepoint logs:

  • State Highway System logs consisting of Interstates, U.S. Highways and State Highways (I, US and SH); and
  • Non-State Highway Federal Aid System logs consisting of National Highway System, Surface Transportation Principle Arterials, Surface Minor Arterials and Surface Transportation Collectors (NHS, STP, SMA and STC).

The milepoint log webpage now provides access to both state highway system logs and non-state highway federal-aid system logs. The logs are listed by district and statewide. All state highways, interstates and U.S. highways are listed individually. The milepoint logs are used internally and by several state agencies, including the Idaho State Police, who use the milepoint descriptions and location to locate accidents, incidents and guide their officers to a location quickly and efficiently. Getting the logs updated with the most recent highway data was a priority for the GIS section.

"We believe that all hyperlinks on ITD's website are pointing to the most current milepoint logs," said GIS Manager Wendy Bates. "Please let us know if you find orphaned files by sending us the URL." The GIS section can be contacted at GIS-info@itd.idaho.gov.

Bates recommends that people needing access use the milepoint log webpage at http://www.itd.idaho.gov/highways/milepointlog.
