Law enforcement officers investigate crashes at ITD-sponsored training

Law enforcement officers from across Idaho attended an intensive pedestrian-crash analysis and reconstruction training May 12-16. The training was sponsored by Idaho Transportation Department's Office of Highway Safety.

At a location near the Boise Police Department, vehicles driven at various speeds collided with mannequins representing pedestrians and bicyclists to demonstrate the dynamics involved in a crash. Officers attending the training applied field-testing techniques used in their crash investigations.

The 33 participants learned about calculation methods used to analyze the speed and movement of pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles impacted in a crash. They also learned how to use evidence associated with injuries to help in their investigation.

“This training will be used by Idaho law enforcement officers to assist with crash investigations involving bicyclists, pedestrians and motor vehicles," said Josephine O'Connor from OHS.  "Bicyclists and pedestrians are involved in a fatal or serious crash at almost one per day in Idaho.”

The training also aids in the formulation of education, engineering, and enforcement strategies that help reduce the number of collisions between pedestrians and automobiles as they interact on Idaho highways, she explained.

The 40 hours of training was provided by Greg Russell, from Accident Analysis& Reconstruction Inc.
