Reconstruction takes another huge step forward in east Boise with demolition of Broadway Bridge

Crews this week took another significant step in the reconstruction of the 45-year-old Interstate 84 bridge at the Broadway Avenue Interchange, demolishing the bridge overnight on Monday (July 7). They went back out the following night to finish removing shoulder columns.

ITD is adding turn lanes on Broadway Avenue, replacing the bridge and ramps, and adding a third lane to I-84 between the Broadway and Gowen interchanges. The project is expected to be completed by late 2015.

The interchange will be replaced with a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) design. The work is necessary to accommodate increasing traffic volumes, from 8,850 per day on the interstate in that area when the bridge was built in 1969, to 74,000 over, under, and on the bridge ramps today, to the projected total of 149,000 two decades from now.

Concrete Placing Company, of Boise, is the contractor on the $26.7 million project.
