CDL holders medical card reporting is getting easier

A new electronic reporting system will streamline state and federal reporting requirements for Idaho Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders and medical providers who are certified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

The pilot software program is already used by Primary Health Medical Group to report CDL medical card data directly to the Idaho Transportation Department. It is designed to provide a way for CDL holders to meet their state reporting requirements and at the same time, fulfill the federal reporting requirements of FMCSA certified medical examiners.

Benefits of the new program include a reduction of trips to the DMV for CDL holders and elimination of manual re-entry of information by DMV personnel and medical examiners.

"Having CDL drivers stand in line at the DMV holds up commerce and the transport of goods and services," said ITD Driver Services Manager Ed Pemble.

CDL holders who obtain their medical card examination through participating medical providers such as Primary Health Medical Group have the benefit of electronic submission of an image of the medical card and its data directly to the state DMV. It is hoped that other medical providers will join the program and offer these services in the future.

"The new electronic reporting system will reduce trips to the DMV and streamlines the entire reporting process," Pemble said.
