Veterans gather at Statehouse for renaming of Interstate 84

Interstate 84 has formally been renamed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway.

A ceremony on the Idaho Statehouse steps Aug. 12 officially recognized the designation and was attended by veterans and their family members and also by Idaho Senators Jim Risch and Mike Crapo.

The bill for the highway designation was introduced to the Idaho Legislature on Jan. 22 and signed by Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter on Feb. 20. It became effective on July 1.

Sen. Lee Heider of Twin Falls sponsored the bill and helped it get passed. The I-84 Vietnam Veterans Highway begins in Oregon and will run through Idaho. There are plans to eventually continue the designation into Utah.

The year commemorates the 50th year for Vietnam War veterans who are honored for their service, valor and service.
