Managing incident scenes and basic weather training offered in October

October training opportunities are available for people to help keep motorists safer on Idaho highways and prepare for the unexpected.

The Traffic Incident Management workshop, Oct. 7 and 8, will train ITD workers, especially foremen, lead workers and other maintenance personnel, on the basics of managing incident scenes and how to train others to respond in their own communities.

Co-sponsored by the Idaho Transportation Department and the Federal Highway Administration, the free 12-hour training will take place at the Riverside Hotel in Boise. The first day runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The workshop resumes at 8 a.m. the following day and will conclude at noon. An optional half-day of hazmat-awareness training will be offered Oct. 8, beginning at 1 p.m.

To register, call ITD Emergency Program Supervisor Mel Coulter at (208) 334-8414.

National Weather Service (NWS) staff from Boise and Pocatello will revive basic weather training offered to maintenance workers in the past. A limited number of seats is available for the Oct. 15 session that runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the National Interagency Fire Center near the Boise Airport.

People also may participate in the session remotely through video conferencing in a webinar format by calling (877) 996-4432 and entering participant code 597826#.

Tentative topics for discussion include an NWS briefing on collaborating with ITD, a summary of travel page and 511 system enhancements. Avalanche forecasting for Idaho 21 and winter performance measures also will be discussed.

For more information about either training opportunity, contact Mel Coulter at (208) 334-8414 email him at mel.coulter@itd.idaho.gov.
