Whitewater Park renovations coming down the pike

More than a few ITD headquarters employees walk around the pond or otherwise take advantage of Whitewater Park, so the latest plans from the city of Boise for renovations to the park south of ITD might be of interest. Plans are to get started on river activities over the winter and then to continue work for 18 months.

The city is embarking on an effort to construct the Esther Simplot Park Project, replace the existing Farmers Union Ditch Company intake, and perform the adjacent Boise River Park Phase II (future work). Eventually, this will provide users with features including roadways and parking, restroom facilities, pathways, green spaces and pond access.

The project also will retain many existing natural features (such as the primitive path around Pond 2), and some of the history of the site (the gravel ponds and some existing concrete features). Future phasing of the river park will include an emphasis on creating both in-river and riverside features to encourage recreational activities.

Eventually, weir-like structures will be added to the calm water areas to provide the whitewater (for which the parkway is named) for kayakers and paddleboarders.
