Major traffic changes to westbound I-84 near Meridian to start Oct. 7

Work has been accelerated on westbound Interstate 84 between Five Mile and Cloverdale roads. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) will put in place a new traffic pattern by Tuesday (Oct. 7). One lane of westbound I-84 will cross over to the eastbound side of the median between Five Mile and Cloverdale roads.

Shifting traffic into a crossover will give crews room to rebuild the original 1960s outside lanes and shoulders of I-84. The crossover will be in place until this winter. Drivers can expect to see crews working Monday and Tuesday nights as they prepare to put the crossover in place. Initiation of this work is weather dependent.

Westbound drivers coming through the Wye Interchange will need to merge earlier than usual. The westbound crossover lane will be bordered with concrete barrier and barrels. Motorists who choose to use this lane will not be able to exit at the Eagle Road Interchange.

"This is a complex project, and the contractor found an opportunity to complete the westbound work between Five Mile and Cloverdale roads this year," said Project Engineer Jayme Coonce. "ITD is asking everyone to leave early, slow down and pay attention in the work zone."

The eastbound I-84 crossover between Meridian and Cloverdale roads will be put in place next weekend (Oct. 10-12).

ITD is reconstructing the Meridian interchange and improving I-84 between Meridian and Five Mile roads. The project also includes rebuilding the drainage system in the median and resurfacing the inside lanes.

Concrete Placing Company, of Boise, is the contractor for the $50.8 million project. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2015.
