Your email is getting better protection from spam

The filter that protects your email from spam is changing. While all department email will eventually migrate to the cloud where the Microsoft On-line Exchange spam filter offers protection from unwanted communications, ITD will temporarily move its email protection to a new spam filter used at the Department of Administration.

“The old spam filter is no longer supported or receiving updates, which is allowing more and more unwanted emails to come through to our users,” said Barton Phelps, IT systems security analyst.

The Department of Administration currently manages spam filtering for all ITD email users, but is replacing the old filter called Iron Mail with a new filter called McAfee Email Gateway, or MEG.

MEG will allow users to manage their own email quarantine, Phelps explained. End users also will be able to create and manage their own whitelists, which are messages always delivered, and blacklists, which delete messages from quarantine and block selected senders.

“The Service Desk will be the first point of contact for all MEG end-users for education and assistance,” Phelps said. “They also have helpful instructions available which will be emailed to all users.”
