ITD employees prepare for winter in Avalanche Alley

Just outside of Avalanche Alley, as the slide-prone, 12-mile stretch of Idaho 21 between Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit is known, some 40 ITD employees spent Dec. 4 in Lowman taking part in an all-day workshop about working in Idaho’s most active avalanche zone.

The course included insight and presentations from ITD avalanche experts Bill Nicholson and Chantel Astorga to the National Weather Service, State Communications and others who work in, forecast or maintain Idaho 21.

The course also included time outside learning to use avalanche beacons in the event a person is caught buried in the snow.
