District 1 rapid response to delineation issue
earns gratitude from homeowner

Imagine trying to find a driveway or street without a street sign or any indication of where you need to turn? Now imagine that same scenario with the further hurdle of failing eyesight. Just a few days ago, that situation presented itself to District 1's maintenance team, and their quick response earned heartfelt thanks from the homeowner who was looking out for his elderly aunt and uncle.

On the afternoon of March 4, Daniel Wilms contacted D1 District Engineer Damon Allen to say the marker posts have been flattened since last year and the stree- name sign and post are gone altogether in front of his home in Benewah County, at U.S. 95 (Sheep Creek Road).

"It is very difficult at night to even find the approach," Wilms said, "especially for my aunt and uncle who are in their 70s. I was nearly hit the other night."

Under the direction of District Operations Manager Jason Minzghor, District 1 crews went out that evening and added delineation to the driveway, with the promise to return to post the street-name sign when the new sign was received from Boise, where it was ordered.

In an email the following morning to Wilms, Minzghor said, "Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We fixed the delineators last night, but may have to order a sign out of Boise if we can't find the originals, which can take approximately a month."

Minzghor also passed along the name and number for Benewah Maintenance Foreman Ross Farrell (pictured right) if Wilms had any further questions.

Less than an hour after Minzghor sent him the news, Wilms responded, "Thank you for such a prompt response! My aunt and uncle are returning from their trip Monday; it will be a great help!"

Farrell guessed that the damage to the existing signs and posts may have been part of a non-ITD job last summer to install fiber optic cable.
