New Contest Tracker allows office to chart progress toward director’s goal

When Director Brian Ness took the reins at ITD in January 2010, he mentioned a goal that has often been repeated in the years since — to become the best transportation department in the country. One of the ways to know that is happening, he said, is when the department is recognized for the quality of our work. ITD’s Office of Communications now has a way to chart progress toward that goal.

An Awards Tracker was built by Steve Grant to allow the office to better keep track of contest entries and plan for future nominations. The tracker lists more than 50 possible awards, as well as the deadlines, entry fees, nomination forms and specific websites necessary for each.

“In the past, we often didn’t even know when a project won unless it was relayed to us. This allows us to be more proactive in selecting entries and gives us the time to put together the best possible nomination to maximize our chances of winning,“ said Grant.

ITD has been recognized with 164 state and national awards/honors since Ness took over five years ago.
